What is the big deal that I should keep my conscience clean? So I feel bad for hurting my neighbor...he deserved it, and I did the right thing to show him right!....hmmm...this doesn’t feel right....oh well my remorse will go away....Will it?
The truth is, conscience is like the nervous system of our bodies, in a spiritual sense, that is pushing us towards doing the right thing. Its really awesome how it works. When our bodies get thirty, the brain sends different communication to our organisms that we need to go get a Coke, or else we’ll die of thirstiness. And if we follow our impulses to get up and get a drink of Coke or Pepsi, we satisfy our thirst and don’t die. It is the same thing in the Spiritual world, when we go against the law that is in our heart, an activation system goes off warning us that if we don’t fix our paths before God then we cannot continue to function right until we fix the problem. Its really simple:) but kinda hard.
In the Bible there’s a very interesting story about King David who was a real hero to me. When faced with a tough situation, David decided to keep his conscience clean before God. This instance from his life is clearly illustrated in 2 Samuel 16.
When King David grew old his son was trying to overthrow his father, so he can become king. This was a very stressful situation for David, he had to run away from his own kingdom to hide from his son. Imagine your self in David’s shoes and how you would have felt in his situation. I think I would be really mad if my son betrayed me thus. I would be tempted to be irritated and let the flesh get the best of me. OK this gets interesting: As David was being chased by his own son, a relative of Saul (the previous king)whos name is Shimei, started following David’s people and he shouted insults at him and threw rocks at David and his whole army. As if David was not discouraged enough, people from his past were making new problems for him. As David and his family and followers kept walking, the man grew more obnoxious, and the people who were with David began to get impatient with this man. They said ““Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king?” and others proposed, “Let me go over and cut off his head!” These ideas were might have been tempting to David, but even through his troubles, David had his mind set on keeping his conscience clean before God. (This is my favorite part) This is what David replies to the people “Leave him alone and let him curse, for the Lord has told him to do it. 12 And perhaps the Lord will see that I am being wronged and will bless me because of these curses today.” David did no harm to the man. He fought of the temptations and trusted God to take care of his business. By being patient with Shimei and doing him no harm, he was successful in keeping his conscience clean before God and God blessed him. In the end, God defeated all of David’s enemies, and brought peace to David’s country once again.
This story of David is very relevant to my life as well. Everyday i fight against my flesh to keep a clean conscience. Some times i feel discouraged and think that its ok for me to have a dirty conscience because its not a big deal. However when i follow this path, i become all on my own, all my battles are lost because God steps away from me. I am ready to hurt others just to get things my way. Without even realizing that maybe it was God who sent that person my way. I am convicted, and i dont want to live that life anymore. From this story i learn that it is important to keep your conscience clean before God, and He will bless me and fight all my battles for me. People will come my way and try to discourage me, but i will remember that everything is in God’s hands, and He will help me with my troubles if I strive to please Him in keeping my conscience clean.
